Over the past 18 months, Swiss International Air Lines (SWISS) has outfitted its entire Boeing 777-300ER long-haul fleet with the innovative AeroSHARK technology.
This technology, applied to the aircraft’s fuselage and engine nacelles, mimics the hydrodynamic properties of shark skin, reducing air resistance during flight and thereby lowering both fuel consumption and carbon dioxide emissions.
All 12 of SWISS’s flagship long-haul Boeing 777s now feature this cutting-edge technology, making SWISS the first airline worldwide to have a fully AeroSHARK-equipped fleet.
Since the inaugural scheduled AeroSHARK flight in October 2022, SWISS has progressively equipped its Boeing 777-300ER aircraft with this fuel-saving technology. The final aircraft, HB-JNF, received its AeroSHARK film earlier this month, completing the full implementation across the fleet.
The transparent AeroSHARK film, with its micrometer-deep riblets aligned with the airflow direction, replicates a shark’s skin to reduce air resistance by around one percent. Last year, even with only a portion of the fleet equipped, AeroSHARK helped SWISS cut kerosene consumption by over 2,200 tonnes and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 7,100 tonnes.
AeroSHARK technology, developed jointly by Lufthansa Technik and BASF, may soon be applied to other aircraft types within SWISS's long-haul fleet.
