Lufthansa & Meta to offer onboard Virtual Reality

“This is a watershed moment for the broader industry: the first time an airline will offer access to Quest 3 headsets in a commercial in-flight setting.” So says Meta as it announced that it has partnererd with Lufthansa to trial Virtual Reality (VR) on select flights that boast the new Allegris Business Class Suite .

Meta is introduding Travel Mode on Meta Quest 2 and 3, allowing passengers “to move about the metaverse”.

Travel Mode turns Quest into an in-flight entertainment device - passengers can watch films on a massive virtual screen, play a game, focus on meditation app, and even get some work done in private.

The headsets’ balanced, ergonomic design, will mean that no neck pillow is required.

Beginning this summer, Business Class Suite Passengers on the selected flights will be able to:

  • Enjoy an immersive cinema experience with select movies and television shows
  • Listen to prominent travel podcasters and see their stories come to life through spatial videos and select 360-degree video content
  • Discover travel destinations from a bird’s-eye view with virtual sightseeing previews before you arrive
  • Play interactive games like Connect Four and Chess
  • Relax with active meditation exercises or enjoy a passive, lean-back experience

Quest will detect the airline Wi-Fi, prompt the user to join the network, and automatically launch the browser. Then they will have access to the airline's entertainment system and Meta's own offerings.

Meta's algorithms will account for the motion of an airplane - allowing a stable and consistent experience in Travel Mode—even when looking out the window.

The a new “pilot program” with Lufthansa begins this Summer:

“The Lufthansa Group has already been using extended reality in training and marketing for some time—and now, during this test case, we are first mover for this innovative entertainment offering. Through the cooperation with Meta, two innovative market leaders can open the next chapter of in-flight entertainment and offer guests completely new experiences,” says Björn Becker, Head of Future Intercontinental Experience Lufthansa Group.
